Waterfront Design Principles

To listen carefully to the people of the area, discerning their needs and desires for the waterfront and incorporating them into the design.

To provide for people from all walks of life, physical ability, and financial status. To consider everyone’s needs and desires equally important in providing a waterfront for everyone to enjoy.

To create a unique spot in the tourism market that would exist only in Buffalo.

To provide large and small business opportunities, ranging from the individual to the corporation level.

To provide a multi-use green space area limited only by the imagination as to what activities could occur.

To enable close interaction between the public and the lake for fishing, viewing nature’s beauty, and relaxation.

To provide safe and easy boat access to the attractions, activities, and the green space.

To provide generous parking and transportation access, both public and private.

To create a safe waterfront with easy access, spurring future incremental development on grander scales.

To use existing government funds to create public spaces without additional burden to the local taxpayer. Henceforth, creating increased tourism income, reducing the burden to the local taxpayer.

To use the Buffalo winters as a design element, complimenting the major attractions, enabling them to be all year round venues.

To provide easy access to the waterfront for locals and tourists, using clear signage and existing infrastructure to the greatest extent possible.

To provide housing to all income levels, insuring a thriving, diverse waterfront community for all.

To design a destination where visitors are introduced to all that Buffalo has to offer, by showcasing Buffalo’s strengths and culture.
