Outer Harbor waterfront plans were created out of a desire to bring fresh vision to Buffalo N.Y. To turn our city around we must take advantage of the tourism market. With Niagara Falls only a short drive away this goal is attainable. Large Theme Parks, PGA Golf Courses, Water Parks, etc. require large investments and are a great goal for the future.
We need to start by laying a foundation that will make these investments attractive. The US government offers money to start developing our waterfront. Using this money to remediate and develop the property between the Pier Restaurant and Freezer Queen will shed the public of the "we’re not going to be able to get anything done" attitude and rally us all to get involved in creating a waterfront that helps this city prosper again. Using this available funding the following can be completed:
- Remediate the area.
- Install shoreline protection to allow boaters to tie up and the public to walk right along the edge of the lake.
- Create seating to watch the boats, sunset, or just read and enjoy the lake.
- Install a grass parkland area between the Pier Restaurant and the Bell Slip to have picnics, play Frisbee or just hang out.
- Install grass and striped sports fields, volleyball and basket ball courts along with other sports areas.
- Turn Ohio Street and Furnham Blvd. into two way streets which would be accessed by the Tifft street off ramps.
- Install appropriate signage for easy access.
While this beginning does not yet create tourism, it will inspire the public to rally together in support of a great Buffalo Waterfront. No utility services would be included at this time.
From here we can attract additional funding and begin a fund drive to create a "Cultural Promenade" where all of the historic and ethnic cultures of Buffalo will be represented in a mile long tourist attraction. Here people can eat breakfast in Greece, lunch in Germany and dinner in the Orient. Products and foods indigenous to each culture will be available as people stroll from one culture to another. A cultural museum in each of the districts preserves the culture and history of the people of Buffalo, protecting our cultural heritage and enhancing opportunities for heritage tourism. It is a combination between Disney’s Epcot Center and Buffalo’s own Pan American Exposition on a large scale with a great sense of reality.
